Dry needling is rapid, short term needling which aim to restore normal muscle health, reduce muscle tissue tension, and help to alter dysfunctional tissue in order to improve or restore function.
During dry needling the acupuncture needle is inserted directly into the myofascial trigger point ( MTr- is hyper irritable spot in skeletal muscle that is associated with a hypersensitive palpable nodule in a taut band of muscle ) and the main aim is to elicit local twitch response.
Dry needling helps to relieve pain, increase ROM, decrease muscle tightness and stiffness.
Dry needling treats muscle tissue, with a goal to reduce pain, inactivate trigger points and restore function. During treatment, a thin monofilament needle penetrates the skin and treats underlying muscular trigger points for the management of neuro-musculoskeletal pain and movement impairments.
While the name of the procedure may sound intimidating, dry needling -when performed by a trained and certified physical therapist- is safe and minimally discomforting.
Dry needling is used to increase range of motion that may be limited due to muscle tightness or scar tissue. Dry needling may also treat:
The treatment may be uncomfortable with a possibility of soreness experienced in the next few days.
